Upgraded my UniFi HyppTV set top box (STB) from Huawei EC2108E to Huawei EC6108V8

If you are new home subscriber to TM UniFi with HyppTV package, you will probably get the new Huawei EC6108V8 set top box (STB) as your IPTV service decoder.

If you are existing TM UniFi VIP package user, your HyppTV STB might be of the old Huawei EC6106V5 model...

or even the older Huawei EC2108E...

The Huawei EC2108E STB can only run the HyppTV app, and provides the least control to user.

The Huawei EC6106V5 STB comes with higher hardware specs as well as later version of Android, and is possible to install with other Android apps with some hacking.

The Huawei EC6108V8 is much smaller in size, has even better hardware specs, running on Android 4.4.2, and comes with Google Play Store which makes installation of Android apps even easier.

If you are using the older HyppTV STB and have recently upgraded your UniFi to the 30Mbps or 50Mbps package, you can request to replace your old STB with the latest model for free. As a result, I've upgraded my Huawei EC2108E STB to EC6108V8.

Note that the LAN port of your STB is connected to the LAN port of your router with VLAN 600, which is dedicated for IPTV service. So you can't use it to access to the Internet.

In order for your STB to access to Internet and download apps from Google Play Store, you need to enable WLAN under Settings > Wireless and Network > Enable WLAN.

With this, you can connect the STB to your home WiFi network provided by your router, and use it to connect to the Internet.

Voyager8 said... Reply To This Comment

@abuabi

Yes. You can install any apps available in Google Play Store installed inside the box. You can also install individual apps, such as the YouTube for Android TV, by installing the apk file in thumb drive.

I also noticed the new router's signal is stronger then the old router which was installed more than 5 year ago. Mine still gives a download speed of 15-20 Mbps on the 30 mb package while my friend using the new router gets almost full 28-30mbps speed!Will that be a good excuse to request for free upgrade to get the new set up box without getting declined ?

Hello all, has any of you try to connect EC6108V8 HyppTV service wirelessly to the TM Archer C5 router? If able to connect, please don't mind to share the success story of how to setup the Archer C5 to connect STB wirelessly.

Voyager8 said... Reply To This Comment

@Arbil Mis

Should be the normal way to connect.

Enable WiFi in EC6108V8, it will detect your AP/Router, key in the password to connect.

If unable to detect, try enable both Wireless 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz in the AP/Router, and set the mode for Wireless 802.11a/b/g/n/ac mixed.

Thanks for your reply. I think this method can only be used for Internet browsing via the STB, right? I am looking for the method to watch HyppTV using WiFi, instead of connect STB to Archer C5 using Ethernet LAN cable to the HyppTV dedicated port. Thanks!

Voyager8 said... Reply To This Comment

@Arbil Mis

The HyppTV is running on a separate VLAN from Internet, therefore need a dedicated network port.

If your TV is far away from the router, you can use a powerline homeplug such as TP-Link TL-PA8010P to connect them together using electrical wiring in your house.

If you want to watch HyppTV from the Internet, can try install HyppTV Everywhere app from Google Play Store.

Unknown said... Reply To This Comment

Thank you sir for the various suggestions, I did came across the Powerline adapter option, but maybe due to noisy and lousy wiring of electrical cable, sometimes speed drops or even disconnected between 2 homeplugs. I saw in forums elsewhere, people connects HyppTV via WiFi to router, but that is for older boxes RG4332 and EC6106V5. I couldn't find similar setting in Archer C5 to enable another Wireless VLAN, so I asked for help here :)
Thanks again.

Voyager8 said... Reply To This Comment

@Arbil Mis

In this case, you can get another Wireless AP such as TP-Link TL-WA801ND or TL-WA901ND, connect the AP to the HyppTV port of the router.

Then the AP can serve WiFi for HyppTV to your STB. You need to enable WiFi to receive it.

Now in your STB, you can only use the WiFi to connect to HyppTV or the Internet, but not both at the same time.

To connect to Internet, select the WiFi SSID name of your router. To connect to HyppTV, select the WiFi SSID name of your AP.

Thank you Voyager8, this is another great idea! I can try this method as I have spare AP. I believe this way can work, let me try out :)

We cannot sign in to google store even after connected to internet. It says Couldn't sign in. Can't establish a reliable connection to the server. This could be a temporary problem or your Android device may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues, call Customer Care

Unknown said... Reply To This Comment

Called TM.. after long chat.. there is no free upgrade whatsoever.. only change if malfunction and free if under warranty and pay if no and regardless warranty or not RM53 charge for technician to come over your house to check..

Hi. Do you know if the hypp tv STB can be used anywhere? I mean if we not using hypptv can we give the stb to other people to be use?

Chucky Charlie said... Reply To This Comment

There is something different with unifi stb box compare to streamyx stb box. I own both. My streamyx stb look very similar to that one with Unifi but it can stream with ease even with only 8mbps speed.

The one with Unifi on the other hand, can only use Kodi and stream if you change the port to the normal LAN port of your router or use wifi, and must change the setting to Hypptv(streamyx) before you can start using kodi.

I feel very weird that my atreamyx can stream a lot of link to wqtch hd movie or stream live tv for sports but Unifi keep givving error to load the same link.

I believe Unifi stb box has been set to restrict a lot of link to stream. Still could not find out why Unifi STB using kodi with so much lag compare to streamyx. There must be something that we can do to lift up the restriction.

Dun upgrade, just cancel and register another new plan, u get everything new. New router, modem, hypp, and even phone.

SaiRay said... Reply To This Comment

Hi I did as what you said but my STB can't detect my "hidden" SSID. Anyway to bypass this so that I can install Google play n also access internet on my browser?

Voyager8 said... Reply To This Comment

@Tan Han Hui

Monthly cost for new plan is higher for the same amount of bandwidth.

In addition, there is a waiting period for your new installation, which can be as long as several months. Can you wait for that?

Voyager8 said... Reply To This Comment

@SaiRay

You can manually enter your SSID and password info, even it is hidden.

I am planning to cancel my unifi contract but I need to return both the modem and the hypptv set up box. I never use hypptv from day 1 so when I moved house I think I gave the set top box away. Anyone knows how I can get a free set top box? Otherwise I have to pay penalty. Let me know thanks!
