Garmin Nuvi 2565LM, my 2nd GPS navigator

My Garmin Nuvi 255W GPS navigator which I bought in 2009 is still working fine, but for some reason my family needs a 2nd GPS navigator, so I have purchased a new Garmin Nuvi 2565LM.

It is a genuine AECO unit that comes with 2 years warranty and with AECO and MCMC stickers, sold at RM650 with some free gifts (screen protector, carry case, home charger, etc.). This price is even cheaper than the price I bought my Garmin Nuvi 255W about 4 years ago!

Some of the differences/enhancements of Garmin Nuvi 2565LM from Nuvi 255W includes:

  • A larger 5" screen (255W has a 4.3" screen)
  • Supports microSD card (255W supports normal size SD card for additional storage)
  • Faster and stronger GPS satellite signal detection. It is able to get some GPS signal even indoor near the window.
  • Better and faster search function. It no longer need to specify the location for the search target as in 255W.
  • Automatic speech recognition (ASR) to issue voice command without the need to touch the GPS.
  • Bluetooth integration with Android smartphone, which is able to make or receive hands-free call as well as displaying the phone's address book on its screen. When getting a call, it is able to display the caller's name or phone number. If a Point of Interest (POI) contains telephone information, it is able to make call using the Android phone as well.
  • Customizable Main Menu. I think the default layout is pretty good, so I haven't tried this.
  • Remember last parking spot (when it is removed from its mount).
  • "Go Office" beside "Go Home".
  • MyTrends predictive routing.
  • Route preview among faster time, shorter distance and cost saving.
  • Custom avoidances by area or by road.
  • Trip Planner.
  • ecoRoute, which I haven't tried yet.
  • Built in compass.
  • Calculator.
  • Unit converter.
  • User definable display on bottom left-hand-side of the map. Can display either one of travel direction, elevation, time of day, vehicle speed, time to arrival, distance to arrival, etc.
  • Integrated driving recorder, which I haven't tried this. It needs an additional GDR camera to function.
  • Rear camera video support.
  • Preloaded with 3 maps - City Navigator, MalFreeMaps NT and MalSingMaps NT. Also preloaded with Custom POIs including AES spots.
One thing I dislike about this Garmin Nuvi 2565LM is that, its speaker volume is softer and screen display is dimmer when using battery compared to when it is plugged to the car charger. This could be a "feature" to save the battery juice, but the variance should not be too big. I find it to be either too soft when using battery at 70% volume, or too loud when using charger at 90% volume.

Buying 3-ply surgical face mask online, and the correct way to wear it

Just to share that, in case you are looking for 3-ply surgical face mask and unable to get it from store/pharmacy around your area, or the price has already jacked up, you can actually buy from the Internet, which will deliver to you at your doorstep within 1-2 day, and the price is reasonably cheap.

For example, if you look around in Lelong website, you can find seller selling 5 boxes of the 3-ply surgical face mask (50 pieces per box) at the price of RM33 only, which is equivalent to RM33/250 = 13.20 sen per piece.

If you are looking for lower volume like 1 box (50 pieces), there are sellers selling as low as RM10 per box, which is equivalent to RM10/50 = 20 sen per piece.

As for the correct way of wearing the face mask, the right one should be the coloured side face away from you, while the white side touches your face. There are some rumours spreading around the Internet saying that in certain cases you should wear with the white side in front, which I believe is not true. Whether you are sick and want to prevent virus spreading out, or you are preventing yourself from inhaling harmful substances from outside such as haze/dust/virus, just wear the face mask with the coloured side in front. You can refer to many professional medical websites or government healthcare websites to get the correct info. One of the websites is this: http://www.primed.ca/ClinicalResources/MaskStandardsandFAQ.aspx

All schools in KL, Selangor, Melaka, Muar, Ledang, Segamat, Kuantan, PD, etc. to close on 24/6/2013 due to haze

The haze condition in Malaysia and Singapore, which is caused by forest fires in Indonesia, has worsen today.

The Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri G. Palanivel has just instructed for the  closure of all schools in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor on Monday 24/6/2013, as advised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Meanwhile, the Melaka state government earlier instructed all 313 primary and secondary schools plus all pre-schools, including Tadika Perpaduan, Kemas, to be closed on Monday 24/6/2013 due to the haze.

Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob also ordered schools in the Kuantan district and areas badly affected by the haze to close on Monday 24/6/2013.

Johor Education director Mohd Nor A Ghani announced 110 primary and secondary schools in Segamat have been ordered to close on Monday 24/6/2013 following the Air Pollutants Index (AP1) reading having reached the hazardous level of 400.

The closure order for 117 schools in Kluang and 175 schools in Batu Pahat, involving 134,872 students, has not been withdrawn, but the order has been extended to 171 primary and 40 secondary schools in Muar and Ledang following the haze emergency declaration for the two districts (Muar and Ledang) by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today.

In Negri Sembilan, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Haji Mohamad Haji Hasan announced schools in Port Dickson to be closed on Monday 24/6/2013  after the API recorded at 295.

However, 300 schools in Kota Tinggi, Pontian and Pasir Gudang, which were ordered to close because of the haze problem on Friday 21/6/2013, would REOPEN on 24/6/2013 following a drop in the API readings for the three areas.

Symphony Life (SYMLIFE, 1538, f.k.a. BOLTON) transforming to unleash its value

Talking about property stocks listed in KLSE nowadays, few will thought of Symphony Life (SYMLIFE, 1538), but I think this counter worth for investors and analysts to take a look.

In fact, SYMLIFE is a rebranded name from BOLTON just a few months ago. The company said the name change was the 1st phase of its transformation exercise, expected to be complete by year-end.

SYMLIFE transformation involve selling off non-core businesses, and refocusing to property development. Their immediate aim is to return  to the premier league of property developers. Their property development unique selling points focus on quality lifestyle, which brought about their new name Symphony Life.

BOLTON is an old-timer property stock, listed in KLSE since 1973. Its chairman Datuk Mohamed Azman bin Yahya was one of the six individuals in Najib's circle while Najib was appointed Finance Minister in 2008 before becoming the Prime Minister later on (click here to read the news report about Najib's circle). Datuk Mohamed Azman Yahya is also director of Khazanah, founder and group CEO of Symphony House (SYMPHNY, 0016), and ex-CEO of Pengurusan Danaharta Bhd.

SYMLIFE current project includes:

  • Surin in Tanjung Bungah, Penang (GDV: RM201m)
  • Lavendar Heights in Senawang, Negeri Sembilan (GDV: RM370m)
  • Bandar Amanjaya in Sungai Petani (GDV: RM490m)
  • Arata in Bukit Tunku, KL (GDV: RM120m)
  • Sixceylon in Bukie Ceylon, KL (GDV: RM180m)
  • The Wharf in Puchong (GDV: >RM650m)
  • Summer Homes in Puchong (GDV: RM55m)
  • Tijani Ukay in Ukay Perdana (GDV: RM300m)
  • 51 Gurney in KL (GDV: RM210m)
Note that along with the transformation exercise to bring in more value to investors, the estimated GDV of some of the projects above has been revised in their quarterly report, mainly resulting from the change of project blueprint:
  • Tijani Ukay: from RM323m to RM300m since 2012Q4 report onwards.
  • The Wharf: from >RM500m to >RM650m since 2013Q3 report onwards.
  • Summer Homes: from RM40m to RM55m since 2013Q3 report onwards.
  • 51 Gurney: from RM207m to RM210m since 2013Q1 report onwards.

SYMLIFE has a total GDV of RM2 billions worth of new projects to be launched in 2013-2014.

Their reported quarterly revenue and unbilled sales is as below:

Note that its revenue has surged to RM140.518 million during last quarter, at the same time its unbilled sales doesn't decrease following the recognised sales, but in fact increased from RM514 million to RM517 million.

Dynaquest has in its Stock Performance Guide 2013 March Edition estimated the EPS of SYMLIFE in 2013 to be 30.7 sen. With its today's closing price of RM1.18, its PE is only 3.84 which is unbelievably cheap compared with other property stocks in KLSE.

Disclaimer: This article is intended for sharing of point of view only. It is not an advice or recommendation to buy or sell any of the mentioned stock counters. You should do your own homework before trading in Bursa Malaysia.

HTC One (M7) - my 3rd smartphone

4 years ago, I bought my 1st smartphone running on Symbian OS. It is a Sony Ericsson P1i with physical QWERTY keypad, 208 MHz ARM9 PNX4008 processor, 128 MB RAM, 256 MB ROM, 160 MB internal storage, 2.6" touch screen, 240x320 TFT display, Wi-Fi 802.11b, 950 mAh battery, and a stylus. It is a 3G phone.

2 years ago, I bought my 2nd smartphone running on Android OS. It is an HTC Incredible S with 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon Scorpion processor, Adreno 205 GPU, 768 MB RAM, 1.1 GB ROM, 8 GB internal storage, 4" multi-touch screen, 480x800 WVGA display, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, 1450 mAh battery. It is a 3G phone supporting HSUPA/HSDPA/HSPA+ connection. I have just upgraded it to Nik ROM with Sense 4.1 Lite and Sense 5 visual.

Recently, I bought my 3rd smartphone, also running on Android OS. It is an HTC One (a.k.a. M7) with quad-core 1.7 GHz Qualcomm Krait 300 processor, Adreno 320 GPU, 2GB LPDDR2 RAM, 29.8 GB ROM, 32 GB internal memory, 4.7" multi-touch screen, 1920x1080p HD display, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/ac/b/g/n, 2300 mAh battery. It is an LTE 4G phone.

From the specs of the 3 smartphones that I have, you can probably see the evolution in smartphone  over the past 4 years period. By the time I purchased those smartphones, they were the topliner in the market at that particular time period. The One is currently the flagship phone of HTC.

The speaker sound of HTC smartphones had be criticized for being too soft until they finally made significant improvement with Beats Audio from the Sensation series onwards (Sensation was the successor of my Incredible S). Now the HTC One comes with dual front-facing stereo speakers with built-in amplifiers and Beats Audio enhancement (they call it the BoomSound) is a real breakthrough. The sound quality is really good, loud and clear.

There are lots of comparison made among the HTC Ultrapixel camera with F2.0 aperture with HTC Zoe features and the camera of Samsung Galaxy S4, Apple iPhone 5, Nokia Lumia 925, Sony Xperia Z, etc. The camera quality in smartphones has been improved a lot especially over the past 1 year, which is a good competition. Perhaps sooner or later, the photo quality developed by smartphone cameras will be comparable to those taken by my Canon PowerShot S95.

One thing I noticed is you can launch the camera from lock screen directly by pulling its icon up, bypassing the security checking (password/pattern/etc.). This enables us not to miss the precious moment by having quick access to the camera and make it ready to shoot photo soonest possible.

I don't quite like the BlinkFeed on the default home screen. A lot of people find it annoying especially when linked with Facebook. I have unlinked it with my Facebook feed too. The BlinkFeed news photos can only be fed with a handful of predefined websites. It would be more favourable if the user can self define the feeds from the web.

The HTC TV Remote works well with my LCD TV, Astro B.yond STB and Panasonic hi-fi system. I am able to get the Astro TV guide too. However, I am not able to configure it to work with my UniFi HyppTV STB.

The NFC function well, able to detect the Touch 'n Go chips embedded in Zing card as well as MyKad.

Google Now is accessible by long press the Home button (double tap the Home button will open the Recent Apps screen). When Google Now is off, it will show a normal Google Search screen. If you are unable to find Google Now there, try switching your system language to another, such as "English (Singapore)". At the moment there is nothing much available in Google Now for Malaysia user yet. It will show the weather information, estimated travelling time to home, to work, and to other user-defined places.

I use the Metal-Slim transparent hard case to cover the phone. The case provides protection to the phone while keeping its nice full metal body unhide. However, it makes the phone heavier and bulkier. I am thinking of getting the Mophie Juice Pack, but its price is a bit high, especially after adding in the shipping fee.

I have been searching for the DestraShield nanoliquid screen protector that I applied on my HTC Incredible S before, but it seems that this product has disappeared from the market. I ended up applying the Kristall nanoliquid screen protector on my HTC One. They seems to function the same, except Kristall is cheaper but doesn't have Ag+ anti-bacteria formula in it.

Upgraded my HTC Incredible S to Nik ROM with Sense 4.1 Lite and Sense 5 visual

My 2 years old HTC Incredible S Android smartphone with official HTC ROM was last updated to Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich, ICS) with Sense UI 3.6 in July 2012. Since then, it didn't receive any new ROM update from HTC anymore.

Since its 2-years warranty period is now over, I upgraded it to a custom ROM called Nik Project X Rebirth v3.0 with Sense 4.1 Lite and some Sense 5 visual (a.k.a. Nik's ROM). This custom ROM for HTC Incredible S is also running on Android 4.0.4 but bring us the Sense 4.1 UI experience found in HTC One X and some Sense 5 visual found in HTC One (M7).

Although there are some other HTC Incredible S custom ROMs running on newer Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) or even Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean), but they don't include HTC Sense with the ROM.

If you are still using HTC Incredible S, you might probably also want to try out Nik's ROM because it brings new Sense experience as in HTC One series of smartphone, and it runs faster, smooter and more battery efficient than the stock HTC ICS ROM with Sense 3.6. This ROM will also upgrade your phone's filesystem to EXT4 too.

It really makes your HTC Incredible S remain fit and fun for use for quite some times.

In order to upgrade your HTC Incredible S to Nik's ROM, you need to get your phone rooted and S-Offed. There is a detail instruction in XDA developers forum to guide you through the process.

Click here to get the detail instruction to root and S-Off HTC Incredible S.

Note that you need to follow the instruction exactly, including flashing the CyanogenMod 7.2 ROM. This is because you might not be able to install Blackrose HBOOT with some other ROM.

At the end of the process, when you boot your phone by pressing Volume Down and Power key together, your screen should show the information as below.

Once you are done, you can proceed to download Nik's ROM, put it in your SD card, and flash it into your HTC Incredible S with ClockworkMod Recovery.

Click here to go to the download page of Nik Project X Rebirth v3.0 ROM.

After successfully upgraded to Nik's ROM, you can find the 4EXT Recovery Updater app in your app drawer. You can use it to replace your ClockworkMod Recovery with 4EXT Recovery Touch then.

Nik's ROM uses AROMA Installer for its installation. Along the process, you can customize your installation and choose whether to include or exclude the Sense UI, select the looks and feels of the icon style, battery icon, font, etc.

You can also exclude some of the "pre-install" apps that you don't want to install into your phone.

What are the new things and experience you can get in your HTC Incredible S after upgraded it to Nik's ROM? Well, here are a few of them...

The weather lock screen (among the available lock screens in Sense 4.1):

The home screen with Sense 4.1 looks and feels:

Press the phone's Power button, and you can see more options, including taking a screenshot:

The Quick Settings menu:

Now your HTC Incredible S can also have HTC Sense input with trace keyboard:

Long press the Home button to open this Recent Apps screen:

And you also get a faster, better, more feature rich Camera app with HDR, panaroma, show motion video, etc.

In addition, you can just swipe your finger from left to right (from Home button to Search button) to wake up your phone from sleep, and bring it to sleep mode by swiping your finger from right to left (from Search button to Home button). Therefore, you no longer need to use your phone's Power button as often as before.

Are we heading towards a new secular bull market?

The investment sentiment has been gaining momentum recently, especially after the general election.

Some of my chartist friends who use technical analysis in their investment mentioned that the next secular bull market is now right in our doorstep.

If you search the Internet now for the keyword "secular bull market", you will find a handful of articles supporting this bullish view in the worldwide market. You can also easily find the long term DJIA chart similar to the one below in those articles.

Meanwhile, layman investors and other who don't rely much on technical analysis in their investment are also remembering the previous super bull run which started in 1983, 1993, and 2003. So, will the history repeat again in 2013?

To me, I am more than happy to see the next secular bull market formation right now and ride on the bull for the next couple of years (if our chartist friends are correct in their analysis and prediction now).

On the other hand, if the secular bull market delays and not happening in this year or next year, I will also not be disappointed, because you and me have already survive through the past 14 years of secular bear market, aren't we?

If the secular bull market come, it will be a great bonus to all of us in the stock market. If it hasn't come yet, then it is just life as normal.

What do you think?

Live 13th Malaysian General Election (GE13) result reports

Today (5 May 2013) is the 13th Malaysian General Election (GE13) day.

The election poll has ended at 5pm, and the ballot counting is on-going now.

Which website do you go and check for the updated GE13 result reports?

I have chosen http://live.undi.info/ powered by Malaysiakini which page loading is fast, dashboard display is straightforward, and the reports are pretty in time.

It is a clone site of http://www.malaysiakini.com/ which the page loading is not as fast, probably due to more web traffic congestion.

The current parliament results are as below (click browser's refresh to update):

Semiconductor sector showing sign of turnaround. Which stock to pick?

Year 2012 has been a challenging year for semiconductor industry, with Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) Book-to-Bill ratio sunk below 1.00 and bottomed at the 3rd quarter.

The SEMI Book-to-Bill Report provides a first look at the book-to-bill ratio for North American Headquartered Semiconductor Equipment Manufacturers. The 3-month average global bookings and billings are a strong indicator for trends in the worldwide semiconductor industry. A book-to-bill ratio above 1.00 indicates strong demand, while a ratio below 1.00 implies weaker demand.

The chart above shows the SEMI book-to-bill ratio has been continuously improved for 8 months, and managed to stay above 1.00 since January 2013. It is predicted that this year will be much better for semiconductor sector than 2012.

Currently there are 6 public companies in this sector listed in Bursa Malaysia which have a market capital of above RM100 million. They are Globetronics Technology Bhd (GTRONIC, 7022), GUH Holdings Bhd (GUH, 3247), Inari Bhd (INARI, 0166), D&O Green Technologies Bhd (D&O, 7204), Malaysian Pacific Industries (MPI, 3867) and UNISEM (M) Bhd (UNISEM, 5005).

Let's see how they are performing over the last 6 quarters.

The big players MPI and UNISEM are not doing well, with lost-making quarter results. The 3rd biggest player GTRONIC is doing pretty well, and reported the highest net profit among 6 of them for the last 2 quarters.

Among the smaller players, D&O is not doing well, GUH and INARI are doing well.

The 3 counters that didn't make any lost during the past 6 quarters are GTRONIC, GUH and INARI.

Digging into more detail, GTRONIC and GUH are the winners for having much stronger financial position than INARI.

Note that GUH has diversified into other non-semiconductor related businesses, including property development, electrical trading, oil palm plantation, water/waste water and power generation.

The chart below is extracted from GUH FY2012 Annual Report. It seems that GUH does not show a growth pattern in profit making over the last 5 years.

As a result, we can see that the stock price for GUH is also side-lining.

Meanwhile, GTRONIC has also ventured into several new businesses within the industry. Currently, their business is running on 4 key drivers:
  • Integrated circuits
  • Timing and quartz crystal devices
  • LED components
  • Sensor manufacturing
In FY2012, they have spent RM37.7million on CAPEX, including RM30million strategic investments in sensors products for the smart phones and tablets markets.

Their existing sensor products are single-port sensors, i.e. power management devices that ensure power efficiency in smartphones and tablets. They are co-developing with their clients a new generation of multi-port proximity sensors that support multiple functions, which are expected to materialize by 4Q13 or 1Q14.
Their LED components are mainly found in automotive applications, general lighting and household electrical applications. The LED business has been challenging as more and more players are jumping into the bandwagon, squeezing out the profit margin. To counter this competition, GTRONIC keeps moving on with latest technology and innovation.

They now using innovative US LED technology to produce HB LED modules with single bin or single group of white light that could be fully utilised in the general lighting market. They are also working with a multi-national corporation to produce multi-colour programmable LEDs for the stage and display lighting markets in Europe. They are also venturing into the LED components for smartphones and tablets.

GTRONIC has a pretty solid financial track record. The table below is extracted from their FY2012 Annual Report. They show continuous growth in profit making since 2009.

As a result, the stock price of GTRONIC also steadily growing, and hit 100% gain in 2 years time.

Between GTRONIC and GUH, GTRONIC also has the upper hand in dividend yield. Its DY is even higher than most of the REIT counters listed in Bursa Malaysia. They mentioned in their FY2012 Annual Report that they are among the top 50 dividend yielding stocks in Bursa Malaysia.

Disclaimer: This article is intended for sharing of point of view only. It is not an advice or recommendation to buy or sell any of the mentioned stock counters. You should do your own homework before trading in Bursa Malaysia.

A visit to Farm In The City (FITC) @ Seri Kembangan

Last weekend, my family visited a themed petting zoo called Farm In The City (FITC, 城の农场) located at Seri Kembangan.

This petting zoo was just opened in 2012, and has been gaining publicity with its family-friendly attractions. I think one of its main objective is to let urban children in Klang Valley to have a place to experience kampong-style nature. You can find quite a lot of bloggers already shared their visit and photos to FITC.

The location of FITC is near Giant Seri Kembangan and Pasar Borong Seri Kembangan. It is nearby the LDP highway and beside it is a new business area with newly developed shoplots (still under final stage of construction), making it more prominent with its name.

We took a family package at the price of RM99 for entrance of 2 adults and 2 children. The package includes the entrance wristbands for the day, 2 packs of soya milk, 2 bottles of vitagen, a calendar, 2 certificates of visit for the children, and a RM10 food voucher redeemable at the restaurant near its entrance (same day, on family set meals only).

We also bought 2 tickets for pony ride (RM5 each). Pony ride is for children only, and the ride is only for one small circle (less than 2 minutes). You can take photo while the kid is on the ride.

FITC has a number of animals which we can have close encounter with them, including some exotic animals such as big land tortoises, river turtles, small crocodiles, etc. Animal foods are provided without additional charge for us to feed some of the animals, including rabbits, horses, fishes, tortoises, birds, goats, deers, etc. Children can also experience kampong-style small fish catching activity with net and small bucket outside the rabbit feeding area. There are 2 ponds at its center with fishes, ducks, gooses, swans and other water habitats.

There is also a small little farm with some crops, a well, a cow and a dog.

Our visit in FITC took around 3 hours. It is a fun and joyful half-day family activity.

Switched my Astro package to the new RM75 Wah Package (Value Pack 3)

Astro has just launched 3 Value Pack packages, all with monthly subscription fee of RM75 (+6% service tax) respectively.

Basically:

  • Value Pack 1 (Nilai Pack) = Family + Mustika + Indo Pek + Tayangan Hebat + HD Service
  • Value Pack 2 (Namma Pack) = Family + Maharaja + Chakravarthy + Thangathirai + HD Service
  • Value Pack 3 (Wah Pack 哗!配套) = Family + New Emperor + HD Service
The comparison of various Astro Chinese packages and their respective package price is as below:

It is obvious that the new Wah Package is the cheapest among the Chinese packages available. Compared with Super Pack 3 which is more than double its price, the Wah Package does not include Astro On Demand and 4 not so popular Chinese channels. It is value for money.

If you also want to switch to this new Wah Package, you can go to Channel 200 of your Astro and follow the instruction on the screen. You can also call their customer service to do the switch.

How to choose a good USB data and charging cable for your mobile phone

Most of us will have a few USB data and charging cables for our mobile phone, i.e. one at home, one in office, one carrying together with our laptop, etc.

Do you encounter the problem of slow charging, or worst still, unable to charge with the additional USB cable that you bought? Perhaps you can find the solution after reading this.

First of all, although most of the USB cables look alike from their external appearance, they might be different inside the cable, and probably that is the ready why certain USB cable unable to charge your mobile phone, certain can charge but at a very slow rate, certain just work as fine as the original USB cable that come with your phone, and certain even can charge faster than the original cable.

There are 5 wires inside the USB 1 and USB 2 cables, and there are more inside USB 3.0 cable. Since most of the mobile phones nowadays are using USB 2.0 connector, so USB 3.0 is out of our topic here.

The 5 wires are:
  • 2x 28 AWG data lines
  • 2x 20-28 AWG power conductors
  • 1x drain wire
and those 5 wires are connected to the 5 pins in your micro-USB connector.

In fact, there are two kinds of USB cable: fully-rated and sub-channel. The main difference between them is that fully-rated cable can be used for typical peripherals operating at the rate of 480 Mbps (high speed) signalling, while the sub-channel one at the rate of 1.5 Mbps (standard speed) signalling. The construction inside the cable fully-rated and sub-channel cable is different.

As you can see from the diagram above, the fully-rated USB cable is shielded by braid and aluminium foil.

You can probably see some printed codes on the good quality USB cable, including something like this: "28AWG/2C and 24AWG/2C" or "28AWG/1P + 24AWG/2C".

The first code is normally the specification of the data signal pair, which is normally 28AWG. "2C" means 2 conductors, and "1P" or "1Pr" means 1 pair. "2C" and "1P" are basically the same.

The important part is the second code, which is the specification of the power distribution pair. The minimum requirement is 28AWG, and the lower the AWG number the better. This is because lower AWG wire is thinker, and therefore the electrical resistant is lower.

Therefore, charging with a "28AWG/1P + 28AWG/2C" USB cable is normally slower than a "28AWG/1P + 24AWG/2C" cable.

Certain USB cable comes with a ferrite bead at one end, which function is to filter high frequency noise to improve signal transfer.

As a conclusion, when you buy additional USB cable to charge your mobile phone, you should look for:
  • USB 2.0 support
  • High speed 480 Mbps data transfer rate
  • The packaging mentions it is a "charging" cable and not only a "data" cable
  • Power conductors of 24AWG/2C or better (for faster charging speed)
  • (optionally) the ferrite bead
Remember not to only look for the information on the packaging of the cable. Sometimes you will find the specification printed on the cable is different from that mentioned on the packaging.

Beware of dishonest cheap power bank claimed to have high mAh capacity

One of the key issue of mobile phones, particularly smartphones, is that they are power hungry causing their battery doesn't last long. As a result, mobile power bank comes into the market as portable external power source to supplement the internal battery of the mobile phone or mobile device.

While most of the modern mobile devices nowadays are using Li-Polymer battery (鋰聚合物電池) as their power source, a lot of mobile power banks are using the cylindrical or prismatic Li-Ion battery (鋰離子電池).

The major problem or hazard of Li-Ion battery and Li-Polymer battery is that, they will overheat when charged for long time. There is an overcharge prevention IC on its circuit board to cut off the charging when the battery is fully charged. If the IC is malfunctioned, the battery might caught fire or explode when overcharged. (Note: the original article mentioned Li-Polymer will not explode due to overcharge, which I think is not true.)

Another disadvantage of Li-Ion battery is their lifespan will greatly reduced if they are operating in high temperature of 45°C and above. Li-Polymer battery, on the other hand, has higher endurance to high temperature, and can still operate over 4 hours in 85°C without much problem.

Nowadays, you can find a lot of power banks claimed to have charge capacity as high as 12000mAh, 18000mAh, 20000mAh, or even higher, selling at the Internet stores. If they are unbranded and selling at a very cheap price, you need to be alerted before placing your order.

The shorter power bank in the picture above consists of 4 Li-Ion 18650 batteries, while the longer one consists of 6 Li-Ion 18650 batteries. The size of the cylindrical Li-Ion battery in used is 18.25x65mm, and their manufacturing part number is normally in the form of XXX18650-XX.

The quality of Li-Ion battery differs.

Branded made-in-Japan (eg. Sanyo, Panasonic) one normally has capacity of at least 3100mAh, and comes with 1 year warranty. They have higher price too and won't be chosen to make the cheap power bank selling in the Internet stores.

Branded made-in-Korea (eg. Samsung) one is quite reliable too. Part number could be ICR18650-30A, ICR18650-28A, ICR18650-26F, ICR18650-26D, ICR18650-24E, ICR18650-24F, ICE18650-22F, etc. 30F means capacity is 3000mAh, 22F means capacity is 2200mAh, and so on.

Samsung OEM made-in-China Li-Ion battery has 4 grades. The highest A01 grade normally reserved for Samsung own use, while A02, A03 and A04 are made available for customers. Part number could be ICR18650-20, ICR18650-22, ICR18650-24, ICR18650-26, etc. If a power bank claimed to use Samsung batteries, the batteries inside are probably the A02~A04 type.

Certain unbranded made-in-china battery were found to have only 1600-1800mAh but also put in the 18650 code and claimed to have 3000mAh. The cheap power banks probably are using this kind of Li-Ion battery.

For the power bank with 12000mAh capacity above, its capacity is calculated like this:

3000mAh x 4 = 12000mAh

However, if the real capacity of the batteries inside is only 2200mAh, you can only get 2200mAh x 4 = 8800mAh.

For the power bank with 18000mAh capacity above, its capacity is calculated like this:

3000mAh x 6 = 18000mAh

However, if the real capacity of the batteries inside is only 2200mAh, you can only get 2200mAh x 6 = 13200mAh.

Beside the possible short-change in real capacity, since the size of the Li-Ion batteries are the same, some dishonest power bank might even use recycled batteries!

The picture above is said to be taken from a newly purchased cheap power bank, opened up for inspection. Note that the colour of the 6 Li-Ion batteries are all different, which is very unlikely if they are manufactured from the same batch.

Also note that the soldering point is rusted and shows sign of multiple re-soldering. There is also leftover glue on the surface.

Worse still, what if the cheap dishonest power bank does not have a properly functioning overcharge / over-discharge circuit?

And even more ridiculous case, you probably get only a single Li-Ion battery with 2 bags of sand.

So, better be cautious when you buy power bank either from Internet or shop, especially when the product is unbranded and the price is cheap.

Malaysia Interbank GIRO money transfer cost to reduce to 10 sen, cheque will be charged processing fee on top of stamp duty

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) plans to encourage paperless electronic money transfer by greatly reduce the charge of Interbank GIRO (IBG) money transfer with Internet banking or mobile banking, and at the same time greatly increase the cost of cheque transaction by charging processing fee on top of the existing stamp duty of each cheque issued out by the consumer.

Effective 2 May 2013, bank charge for IBG transaction performed online via internet banking or mobile banking will be reduced to RM0.10 only, compared to the current rate of between RM1-RM4.

On the other hand, from April 2014 onwards, the a processing fee of RM0.50 per cheque transaction will be charged, on top of the existing RM0.15 stamp duty, making the transaction per cheque to cost RM0.65. The processing fee will gradually increase to the level of RM3 in the future.

Note that before 2010, outstation cheques were charged RM0.50 by the bank for clearing. That charge was waived since the implementation of Cheque Truncation and Cheque Conversion System (CTCS) in Malaysia. Now it seems that the RM0.50 cost will be added back in the form of processing fee, and this time, is regardless the cheque is local or outstation.

It is a good news for online banking users to be able to transfer money electronically at a much lower cost in the near future.

However, as far as we know, transferring of money via online banking is capped to RM5,000 per day or so. Unless the banks revise this limit, it will bring inconvenient to us. In certain occasions, writing cheque is still the more preferred way, especially when the amount of money is large, such as buying a car, buying a house, paying lawyer fee, etc.

It is also a more common practice for companies to make payment in cheques.

I hope that BNM will really think through carefully before enforcing the "discouraging mechanism" of using cheque in order to get people to use electronic money transfer.

DAYANG (5141) share price hit new historical high again

Dayang Enterprise Holdings Bhd (DAYANG, 5141), an oil & gas company specilized in offshore topside maintenance services (TMS), offshore hook-up and comissioning (HUC) services, etc. is considered to be one of the largest offshore platform services providers in Malaysia.

Just like most other East Malaysia companies listed in KLSE, most of the time DAYANG remained undetected from the radar screen of most investors. It gained attention since Q4 2012, especially after announcing a superb quarterly report on 19 November 2012 with single quarter EPS of 7.52 sen, and its share price hitting historical record one after another from then onwards.

DAYANG share price hit RM2.72 on 21 January 2013 with high volume of 5.07 million shares transacted. After that, its share price dropped gradually to as low as RM2.34 on 25 February 2013, probably due to the sell down from Lembaga Tabung Haji.

It announced a poorer quarterly result on 26 February 2013 with lower revenue, but net profit is not affected too badly due to higher margin. A 5 sen tax-exempt dividend was announced, going to ex on 15 March 2013. Its share price moved up again, testing the previous high of RM2.72 on 3 March and 6 March 2013. Then, its price corrected to RM2.6x before regained momentum and hit its new record high of RM2.98 today morning and closed at RM2.85 at high volume of 6.58 million shares transacted.

Its intraday chart for 12 March 2013 is as below:

DAYANG is an associate company of Naim Holdings Bhd (NAIM, 5073) and the financial performance of NAIM is currently pretty much depends on its 33.6% holdings of DAYANG. NAIM share price rose 10 sen from RM2.23 to RM2.33 today (12 March 2013).

DAYANG is financially healthy with strong cash position  of about RM300 million. It recently acquired about 26.1% shares of its new associate company Perdana Petroleum Bhd (PERDANA, 7108). PERDANA and PERDANA-WA prices also rose in tandem with DAYANG and NAIM today (12 March 2013).

PERDANA was not doing well financially before DAYANG's acquisition, and is currently on its way making a turnaround. Recently, it disposed 7 old vessels with average age of approximately 30 years to PT Ninda Pratama Vriesindo from Indonesia, for a total consideration of US$3.45m. This move is expected to save about RM10-12 million annually in maintenance cost for PERDANA, and is viewed as an important move in its financial restructuring exercise.

DAYANG is teaming up with PERDANA to bid for a contract potentially worth RM3 billion from Shell, involving the Pan Malaysia Umbrella HUC project. Both DAYANG and Petra Energy Bhd (PENERGY, 5133) are shortlisted and the contract is predicted to be announced soon. Interestingly, PENERGY is an associate company of PERDANA, as PERDANA holds about 29.6% shares in PENERGY.

DAYANG has outstanding contracts worth some RM1.2 billion that could keep it busy until 2016.

The oil and gas activities in Malaysia is very active now. In 2012, Petronas has made  22 domestic discoveries, signed 9 Production Sharing Contract (PSC) agreements, awarded more contracts for marginal field Risk Service Contract (RSC), etc.

Today (12 March 2013), Lundin Petroleum, a Swedish-based independent oil and gas explorer, announced that it found more oil trapped in sand offshore Pahang, Malaysia after drilling in Block PM308A, as an extension to its discovery of oil sands in the same area in 2011.

Malaysia's deepwater reserves potential is estimated to be 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent (BBOE), and only 3 BBOE have been discovered so far, leaving  another 7 BBOE yet to be discovered.

All these new oil and gas development in the region are expected to bring benefit and money to the Malaysian O&G companies. This is the catalyst that will bring analysts' attention to O&G counters in KLSE.

DAYANG is currently covered by HwangDBS, OSK, Public Bank, HLG, RHB, BIMB, etc. All are making "buy" call. HwangDBS and HLG both set its target price to RM3.36 as of today.

Disclaimer: This article is intended for sharing of point of view only. It is not an advice or recommendation to buy or sell any of the mentioned stock counters. You should do your own homework before trading in Bursa Malaysia.

Microsoft Office 2013 traditional suite (retail box) no longer allow installation in more than 1 PC

Microsoft has just launched their Office 2013 suite, which is generally available in 2 different formats:

  • the cloud-based Office 365 chargeable in yearly subscription basis, one subscription entitled to installation in 5 devices regardless PC, laptop, tablet or Mac.
  • the traditional Office 2013 as Full Packaged Product (FPP - retail box) or Electronic Software Delivery (ESD - Internet download), paid once in a life time for the license.
The previous version of MS Office 2010 FPP products allow installation in multiple computers:
  • MS Office Home and Student 2010 - up to 3 computers within the same household
  • MS Office Home and Business 2010 - 1 computer and 1 laptop (mobile device) used by the same user
  • MS Office Professional 2010 - 1 computer and 1 laptop (mobile device) used by the same user
However, the new MS Office 2013, regardless Office Home and Student 2013, Office Home and Business 2013 or Office Professional 2013, is only licensed for 1 user and 1 computer only.

Beside this, the previous license agreement for MS Office 2010 retail products is transferable from one computer to another. You can uninstall the legitimate copy of MS Office 2010 from one computer, and use its license key to install and activate a new copy of MS Office 2010 in another computer, not more than one time every 90 days. You can also make a one-time transfer of ownership of the software and license to another user (i.e. sell or give it to another person).

The new MS Office 2013 was initially non-transferable, meaning once it is installed and activated in one computer, no other computer can use the same license, regardless the original is uninstalled or scrapped or not. This include situation when you want to shift from old or damaged computer to a new computer.

Anyhow, due to numerous protest by the users, there is news that Microsoft has just changed their policy to also allow MS Office 2013 to be transferable now.

Charging battery over the air - wireless charging (a.k.a. inductive charging)

Remember that it was just a few years back when the industry players of devices carrying a rechargeable battery (e.g. mobile phone, bluetooth headset, GPS, digital camera, digital camcorder, digital voice recorder, ... etc.) unified their charging interface to use USB or mini-USB or micro-USB, so that we no longer need to carry charging adapter and charging cable for each and every of the devices, as they can now share a common charging adapter and common USB charging cable.

That move has also made possible for car or furniture to provide USB port featuring charging capability to our mobile devices, and the invention of portable power bank.

What's next?

I think the next move for the industry players is to do away the charging cable and embrace the wireless charging (a.k.a. inductive charging) technology.

Wireless charging involves transmission of power contactlessly (over the air) from the charging base station (transmitter) to the receiver using electromagnetic field. In fact, this charging technology has been used in Oral-B rechargeable toothbrush since the early 90s.

Nowadays, there are already several mobile phones such as Nokia Lumia 820/920, Google Nexus 4 and HTC Droid DNA for Verizon support wireless charging with the Qi standard, and there is rumour for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S IV to join the bandwagon too.

Imagine what will happen to our live in the near future when the wireless charging technology is more widespread:
  • The home theatre system surround speakers can be truly wireless, without the need of power cable.
  • The iRobot or other similar robotic cleaners can be recharged over the air and need to returning to its base station when battery power is low.
  • Workstation or table top can be the charging station for our mobile devices (including laptop). When we put our mobile devices on top, they are automatically recharged.
  • Restaurant, hotel and other places can offer "hotspot" charging service in the same way they are offering Wifi service now.
  • Hybrid or electrical car can be charged when parked at the garage or parking area with the charging base station on the floor.
And possibly, the following scenario could happen in the future too:
  • When one mobile device (such as a phone) is having low power, it can borrow the power from another mobile device (such as another phone, or a GPS, or a "wireless powerbank") by wireless transmission.
  • More home appliance become wireless (kettle, blender, TV, ...) and the amount of  power socket needed in our house/office/building can be substantially reduced.

CNY red packet (ang pow) money in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China

TNS has conducted a study in January 2013, covering 5000 people over the age of 20 in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China, about their Chinese New Year planning and spending to celebrate the festival.

Among the questions asked in the study, there are 2 questions related to red packet (a.k.a. ang pow) money:

  • Average amount of red packet you give out to each individual during Chinese New Year
  • What is the total amount of red packet money you allocate for CNY each year?
And the result for Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China in their respective local currency is as below:

Converted to US dollar, the result for comparison is as below:

It seems that Taiwanese allocates the most red packet amount for each of their family members, while Hong Kong people are pretty generous in red packet given to their relatives, friends, colleagues and employees.

To see the full result of the said TNS study, you need to have Adobe Flash Player installed and:
Note: I faced problem opening the page in Internet Explorer 9, but no problem with Google Chrome,  Firefox and Opera.

EPF declared 6.15% dividend for 2012

Few hours ago, the Employees Provident Fund (EPF, a.k.a. KWSP) has just declared the dividend rate for financial year 2012 to be 6.15%, which is 0.15% higher than the 6.00% dividend declared for 2012 (last year).

This is the highest dividend rate declared by EPF over the past 10 years.

If you have already registered as an EPF i-Akaun member to access your EPF account detail with their online service, you can login to your online account now and check the actual amount of dividend in RM added to your EPF account by viewing your 2012 online statement.

With this dividend rate, it seems that those who have withdrawn their EPF Account II savings to reduce their housing loan during 2012 might be regreted to do so, as the effective mortgage rate is generally lower than 6.15% in 2012, due to a lower housing loan financing rate along the year (BLR-2.4% = 6.6%-2.4% = 4.2%).

If you have withdrawn your EPF Account I savings for investment in unit trust or fund, your fund manager has outperformed EPF if your 2012 ROI in the fund is greater than 6.15%. Otherwise, you might want to meet up with your unit trust agent or fund manager to find out what's wrong.

In 2012, EPF has put the highest proportion of its investment portfolio into the equities (share) market, forming 38.77% of the portfolio.

The EPF 2012 investment return is reported as below:

Therefore, EPF's return of investment (ROI) for year 2012 is 31,024.94/469,035.43 = 6.6146%. Among them, the EPF's equities ROI for year 2012 is 13,912.54/162,089.56 = 8.5832%. However, in their announcement, EPF says their equities ROI is 10.06% instead.

The KLCI at 30 December 2011 (Friday) closed at 1,530.73 with  volume of 1.329 billion and value traded at 1.528 billion. The KLCI at 31 December 2012 (Monday) closed at 1,688.95 with volume of 0.835 billion and value traded at 1.314 billion.

Therefore, the ROI of KLCI in 2012 is (1,688.95-1,530.73)/1,530.73 = 10.3362%

This means that the ROI of EPF in equities portion is lower than the ROI of KLCI!
