My first purchase experience with Tesco Online Shopping

Tesco is my favourite hypermarket for grocery shopping. Usually, I'll go to their physical store near my house.

Tesco Online Shopping service has been made available to my area for quite some times. Now they are having promotion to provide free delivery service (normally they'll charge for RM10 delivery fee) and also free potato chips as gift to online shoppers.

I just need to select the items to purchase from their website, tell them the delivery address, book a delivery time slot, and confirm the order. Payment will be made with credit card only when I receive the goods.

They sent out a confirmation email to me within seconds after the order was placed. I was allowed to make changes to the order or to cancel the order one day before the delivery is due.

Their delivery man called me to confirm there will be person waiting at home during the delivery time slot. The delivery van arrived pretty punctual. I was told that 2 of the items I ordered are out of stock. The rest of the items arrived in good condition, together with the free gift. I was charged for the actual amount and paid with on credit card on the spot.

Buying with Tesco Online Shopping save me time and effort to have to go to their physical store. I also no need to worry about the long payment queue at the store's cashier counter. It is really convenient.

However, here are a few drawbacks:
  • The nearest delivery time slot might not be available. In this case, you might need to pick for a time slot that require you to wait for some times before you receive the goods.
  • Tesco Clubcard vouchers and coupons cannot be applied for online purchase yet.
  • I am not sure whether the Tesco Clubcard points collection is applicable for online purchase or not. There is no place to key-in Clubcard number during online purchase, and there is no device to swipe the Clubcard for points collection during goods receipt.
  • I was not informed about the goods that are out of stock, until their delivery man arrived at my doorstep and inform me so.
After all, this is a good experience of grocery shopping with Tesco Online.

Lazada online shopping website at http://www.lazada.com.my was launched in Malaysia in April 2012. Initially, they faced quite a lot of hiccups and customer complaints, particularly in year 2012. My recent 2 purchases with them (one done in year 2013, one in 2014) convinced me that they have improved a lot, because I received my goods promptly with friendly email and SMS delivery status update, and the whole buying experience is good.

Lazada has already launched their Android app in June 2013. To date, the Lazada app for Android received more than 100k installs since August 2013, but yet to hit the 500k installs target.

In conjunction with the launching of Lazada iOS app, you will get a RM30 voucher if you download the app from Apple iTunes App Store and install it on your Apple mobile device.

Click the ads below to download the Lazada iOS app.

Note that the offer is valid for 3 days only for downloads between 16-18 January 2014. The RM30 voucher can only be used via the iOS app. The terms and conditions for this promo is available after you clicked on the ads above.

Lazada plans to surprise three lucky shoppers who have made a purchase through the new app by giving away three vouchers worth RM500. This lucky draw is eligible to shoppers purchasing using the app from 19 to 31 January 2014.

Registering for CDS eStatement

Whenever our Central Depository System (CDS) account has share movement (buy shares, sell shares, transfer share, receive bonus shares, subscribe to rights shares, etc.), Bursa Malaysia Depository Sdn Bhd will send a Statement of Account (Penyata Akaun) to us via snail mail on the next month.

Even though there is no share movement at all, as long as there are still some shares in our CDS account, we will also receive the Statement of Account at a longer interval.

Now, we are given an option to subscribe to Electronic CDS Statements and Notices (eStatement) from Bursa Malaysia Depository Sdn Bhd to receive such Statement of Account and other notice paperlessly with our email account instead of the paper statement.

Converting to eStatement is free of charge, and can be done online at Bursa Malaysia website, as long as you have received your Password Phrase in your latest Statement of Account.

Here is how to do it.

Step 1: Open your web browser and go to the Request for eStatement webpage.

Step 2: Fill in the online form as shown above and click the Submit button. The Submit button will appear after you fill up the form.

Note that your complete CDS no. is "XXX-YYY-nnnnnnnnn", in the CDS Account No. field, you just need to key in "nnnnnnnnn" which is the last portion of your complete CDS no. You would not be able to submit the form if you keyed in the complete CDS no.

Also note that you need to obtain your Password Phrase from your latest Statement of Account. It will appear on every pages of the CDS statement.

Upon successful submission, you will be able to see the webpage as below.

Step 3: Wait for the confirmation email sent out by Bursa Malaysia to you. In fact, Bursa Malaysia still sent a paper confirmation letter to my postal address.

It's pretty simple, isn't it?

Buying 3-ply surgical face mask online, and the correct way to wear it

Just to share that, in case you are looking for 3-ply surgical face mask and unable to get it from store/pharmacy around your area, or the price has already jacked up, you can actually buy from the Internet, which will deliver to you at your doorstep within 1-2 day, and the price is reasonably cheap.

For example, if you look around in Lelong website, you can find seller selling 5 boxes of the 3-ply surgical face mask (50 pieces per box) at the price of RM33 only, which is equivalent to RM33/250 = 13.20 sen per piece.

If you are looking for lower volume like 1 box (50 pieces), there are sellers selling as low as RM10 per box, which is equivalent to RM10/50 = 20 sen per piece.

As for the correct way of wearing the face mask, the right one should be the coloured side face away from you, while the white side touches your face. There are some rumours spreading around the Internet saying that in certain cases you should wear with the white side in front, which I believe is not true. Whether you are sick and want to prevent virus spreading out, or you are preventing yourself from inhaling harmful substances from outside such as haze/dust/virus, just wear the face mask with the coloured side in front. You can refer to many professional medical websites or government healthcare websites to get the correct info. One of the websites is this: http://www.primed.ca/ClinicalResources/MaskStandardsandFAQ.aspx

Check how strong is your password and how long to hack it

Is your password easy or difficult to be hacked?

Intel has created a webpage to check how strong is your password and theoretically how long to hack it.

Check it out! Click here to go to the password checking webpage to grade your password.

If you are staying in USA, you can also enter the Password Win sweepstake there between 6 May 2013 to 26 May 2013. Prizes consist of 3 grand prizes (Intel Ultrabook worth US$999.99) and 30 first prizes  (McAfee All Access software worth US$99.99).

The password analysing algorithm is written in JavaScript and run on your own computer. You can inspect it with the "view source" function of your web browser. The password you type there would not be sent out to the Internet.

Live 13th Malaysian General Election (GE13) result reports

Today (5 May 2013) is the 13th Malaysian General Election (GE13) day.

The election poll has ended at 5pm, and the ballot counting is on-going now.

Which website do you go and check for the updated GE13 result reports?

I have chosen http://live.undi.info/ powered by Malaysiakini which page loading is fast, dashboard display is straightforward, and the reports are pretty in time.

It is a clone site of http://www.malaysiakini.com/ which the page loading is not as fast, probably due to more web traffic congestion.

The current parliament results are as below (click browser's refresh to update):

The innovative All-New Honda Civic web commercial

In a recent newspaper advertisement of Honda Civic I found this interesting website: http://www.allnewcivic.com.my/

It seems that the website has been around for a few months. It hosts a web commercial short movie of the 9th generation of Honda Civic launched in year 2012.

What caught my attention is that, before the movie is played, the website asked for a photo (either taken from webcam directly, or from file upload) and some basic personal info (name, age, gender, location, etc.).

It actually casts the photo and personal info into the commercial movie played thereafter. You can see your photo appeared in several scenes throughout the movie.

This is truly an innovative way of using mediated reality.

Check and monitor Celcom Mobile Internet data plan usage

Celcom Mobile Internet data plan is currently packaged as follow:

  • mLite (300MB/month)
  • mBasic (1GB/month)
  • mAdvance (3GB/month)
  • mPro (5GB/month)
If you exceed your monthly quota usage of your plan, Celcom will probably throttle your mobile Internet to a very low speed, unless you purhcase additional quota with them.

How to check and monitor your daily and monthly mobile broadband usage, so that you can subscribe to the right plan, without need to pay more (for too much unused quota) to Celcom?

If you are using the data plan with Android smartphone, you can install an app called 3G Watchdog in your phone to monitor your Internet data usage on your side. 3G Watchdog even comes with a widget to report your Internet data actual and predicted usage on your phone's screen.

However, what really matters is not the record on your side, but the record with your mobile operator, as that will be used in your billing and also throttling.

One easy way to check your Celcom Broadband usage status is to send an SMS from your smartphone using its data plan to 22188 with content "VOL STATUS".

Another way which will give you more details is to get the infor from Celcom Online Customer Service (OCS) website.

After login to the Celcom OCS website, drop down the "My Account" menu and select "Fair Usage Policy". Then, click the "Check Usage" button.

You can note that in case you need to purchase for additional quota for your Internet data usage, there is a button to do so.

After clicking the "Check Usage" button, you will need to provide a start date and end date for the checking, which I think should be optional but the website makes it mandatory. Why can't the checking be on the latest month if user doesn't select the date range?

Then, you will get your Celcom data plan info for each billing month within your checking date range. Information includes the billing cycle start date and end date (which you should set into your 3G Watchdog setting accordingly), allocated volume for your package, volume used (this is the important data that we are checking on), subscribed speed (the maximum Internet download speed you can get from your package).

If your Internet has been throttled, you will also see the throttling information there. If you purchased additional quota, the purchased volume is also shown there.

Click on the figure in the Volume Used colume, you can check on your daily recorded usage.

Note that Celcom can actually track your usage down into categories such as file sharing, web browsing, email, messaging and misc.

You will notice that the daily volume recorded by Celcom will be slightly different from the daily volume recorded by your 3G Watchdog app. Anyhow, the variance should not be too wide apart.
