What can you expect from Near Field Communication (NFC)

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a kind of wireless communication technology built upon the existing Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) standards. Research and development activities on NFC have been active since early 2000s.

The official NFC logo is as below. You might probably find it on NFC-enabled devices.


While RFID devices are generally expensive, NFC devices are much more cheaper, making it possible to be included as part of a handphone feature. In fact, the 1st NFC phone is Nokia 6131 launched in 2006, and the 1st Android NFC smartphone is Samsung Nexus S launched in 2010.

The characteristics of NFC are:
  • 2 NFC devices can establish 2-way communication between them.
  • Beside that, NFC devices can also establish 1-way communication to read, write or erase data stored in specific RFID based tags called NFC tags.
  • NFC need very close contact between the devices or tag for the communication to occur. Normally, the gap between them must be within a few centimeters only.
  • NFC communication set-up time is very fast, normally within 0.1 seconds. This make it attractive as data transfer is instant once the devices or tag are touched together.
  • NFC communication is slow (about 424 kbps) compared with other wireless communication technology such as Bluetooth, WiFi, etc. However, this is good enough to transfer a small amount of data instantly. In addition, we can use NFC signal to initiate other faster data communications including Bluetooth pairing, WiFi connection, etc.
Today, as the amount of NFC-enabled devices available in the market has not reach its critical mass yet, this technology is still new for most of us. However, as more and more NFC-enabled handphones and other NFC-enabled devices roll-out to the market, we will have the chance to see it in action everywhere. It is estimated that, there will be over 500 million NFC-enabled handphones in use worldwide by 2015.


Industry players such as Google are working hard in making NFC to support electronic payment, electronic cash, electronic credit card, etc. for their Google Wallet. MasterCard is also working hard to make use of NFC for their PayPass contactless payment feature.
Right now, NFC tag has already shown its capability to do what the QR-code can do. This include storing of:
  • Website URL
  • Phone Number
  • Email
  • SMS message
  • Any Plain Text
  • Contact Information (vCard)
  • Google Maps Location
  • Google / Bing Search query
  • Facebook / Twitter / LinkedIn
  • and more...

The advantages of using NFC tags than using QR codes including:
  • QR code is printed and final. NFC tag can be rewritten (multiple re-use), or optionally made into read-only.
  • QR code must be visible to the scanner. NFC tag can be hidden behind a label/poster/etc.
  • NFC tag reading is faster than QR code reading.
And the disadvantages of using NFC tags than using QR codes including:
  • QR code can be read from far, as long as it is visible. NFC need close contact to work.
  • QR code can be in electronic form (a graphical image file) which can be easily transmitted and duplicated. You can also put it on a webpage and show it to all the browsers. NFC tag is physical.
Right now, we just have to stay tuned and wait for the day of NFC to come to our day-to-day live.

What can you do with QR Code

QR code (QR = Quick Response) is a kind of commonly used 2-dimensional barcode nowadays.

This is the QR code of my blog. I'm sure you have seen other QR codes elsewhere as well.


QR code is originally created by Denso Wave (a subsidiary of Toyota) to keep track of vehicle parts along the manufacturing process. It has been around since 1994. Today, it has been internationally adopted and used for many different purposes, especially in the Advertising and Promotion sector.

What makes QR code so interesting and commonly used?
  • It can store much more information (as much as several thousands characters) than the traditional 1-dimensional barcode. 
  • Other than alphanumeric, it can also store binary data, which can be unicode (such as Chinese characters), image, and almost anything that can be represented in binary data. And it directly supports Japanese encoding (Kanji and Kana).
  • It has small printout size compared with 1-dimensional barcode.
  • It has error correction capability, and still can be read without problem even when partially dirty or damaged.
  • It can be read pretty fast, and from any angle (360 degree omni-directional capability).
  • Other than black-and-white, it can also be printed in multiple colours.
QR code is readable by barcode scanner which support 2-dimensional barcode. Some airlines and cinemas have installed QR code readers at their check-in point and make use of QR code in their customers' self-printed tickets.

However, what make it so popular nowadays is that, there are plenty of QR code reading apps available for smartphones including iPhone, Android Phones, Windows Mobile Phones, etc. and most of the apps are free for download and use.

QR code is also easy to generate, because there are also plenty of software and web-based generator available. One of my favourite online QR code generator is QR Stuff.

  • Twitter Profile / Status Update
  • Facebook Profile / Like

  • Email Address

  • Paypal Buy Now Link

HTC rolled out Android 2.3.5 and Sense UI 3.0 update to Incredible S in Malaysia and Singapore

The OTA (Over-The-Air) Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) together with HTC Sense UI 3.0 of HTC Incredible S smartphone has been made available to Malaysia and Singapore yesterday (29 December 2011) morning.



You can manually check for the update now, or wait for the automated update alert appear on your HTC Incredible S smartphone sooner or later.

Although this update will not cause any data or setting lost to your smartphone, it is always a wise choice to perform a backup using tools such as MyBackup (or the paid MyBackupPro) or Titanium Backup (or the paid Titanium Backup Pro) prior to the update, just in case...
After the update, you will get a new lock screen as the one in HTC EVO 3D. You can customize this lock screen in Personalize > Lock screen. The background can be either your Wallpaper, Photo Album, Friend Stream, Weather, Stocks, or Clock display. You can also assign the apps linking to the 4 quick launch icons there.


Using the phone becomes more fun with the 3D effects of HTC Sense UI 3.0. However, it is harder to get the carousel effect when fast swiping the home screen than in HTC EVO 3D.

                  BNM to issue new series of Malaysian coins in 2012

                  Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) is issuing commemorative coins in the denominations of 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen and 50 sen, to mark the new 3rd Series of the Malaysian coins which will be available for circulation early 2012.

                  This series of new coins are smaller and lighter, making its more user-friendly for the public. The yellow and silver coloured coins and the edge designs enable the public and also the visually impaired to identify and distinguish the different denominations.

                  The new series of coins embodies the latest advancements in minting technology which incorporates improved counterfeit resistance security features. The new metal alloy used for minting has enhanced durability against wear and corrosion.

                  The alloy used in 50 sen coins is Nickel Brass Clad Copper,  in 20 sen coins is Nickel Brass, in 10 sen and 5 sen coins is Stainless Steel.

                  This new series of coins are legal tender and will co-circulate with the existing series. The existing series will be gradually phased out.

                  Vendors of cash handling machines are given 6 months to calibrate their machines to ensure convenience for the use of the new coins.

                  Find out if your smartphone is installed with the infamous Carrier IQ

                  Nowadays, one of the hot topics among the smartphone (iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Symbian, ...) users is about Carrier IQ.

                  Carrier IQ is spy agent pre-installed in certain smartphone that can capture information about the phone numbers you are dialing, your GPS location, the webpages you have visited with your mobile browser, etc. Those information are sent back via the Internet without your notice, invading into your privacy.

                  Carrier IQ has been reported to be found in iPhones, and it is told that you can disable its information sending action with About > Diagnostics & Usage > Don't Send.

                  There are multiple vendors and multiple models for Android phone, and not all of them are affected. If you have an Android phone, good news is that now there are several free tools available in the Market for you to find out whether your Android phone is installed with the infamous Carrier IQ or not.

                  Just open the Market app, and search for the keywords "carrier iq detector" and you will get a list of the detector tools for Android.


                  Use them to check on your Android phone. You can install multiple of them to assure that your phone is not affected. Once you have done the checking, you can go ahead to uninstall the Carrier IQ detection tools.


                  If you find Carrier IQ in your Android phone, removal will be a bit tricky, as you need root access. There are apps such as Logging Checker (a.k.a. Logging Test App) that claims to be able to help you eliminate Carrier IQ in your phone.

                  Understanding Advance Instalment and Capital Repayment in OCBC Bank home loan prepayment mode

                  OCBC Bank in Malaysia has been giving quite a competitive housing loan facility since they introduced the so-called semi-flexi scheme.

                  Unlike the fully flexible home loan provided by some other banks, this OCBC semi-flexi home loan is more difficult to understand, more troublesome to manage, and also introduces cost and constraint when come to excess payment (a.k.a. prepayment) redraw.

                  Anyhow, many people still consider OCBC semi-flexi home loan, as they give among the lowest interest rate, highest possible margin of financing, longest possible serving term, and short lock-in period.

                  If you were to take up this OCBC semi-flexi home loan, you need to understand about their definition and operation of Advance Instalment and Capital Repayment, which are the 2 options of prepayment for you to put in excess money into your loan account in order to reduce the outstanding balance, and therefore will reduce the overall interest paid as well as shorten the overall loan tenure.

                  These 2 prepayment modes are clearly spelled out in the Main Terms & Conditions document that come together with your home loan offer letter. I'll summarize it here.

                  Both Advance Instalment and Capital Repayment will reduce the outstanding balance, and therefore will immediately help you to save on interest charged the next day onwards (since the loan is on daily rests). If you have the current version of the Main Terms & Conditions document, it is stated in Clause 6.6 (a) in that document.

                  Advance Instalment:

                  • Non-redrawable. Once you banked in, you cannot take it out from your account.
                  • You can use it to automatically set off future monthly instalment, provided there is enough Advance Instalment in your account for the deduction. This is useful if you are going away to oversea for a long period, and might not be convenient to serve your monthly home loan repayment for quite some times.
                  • Can make payment with cash (over the counter), cheque, ATM machine, inter-bank transfer, etc.

                  Capital Repayment:
                  • Redrawable to your saving or current account with OCBC Bank, subject to the terms and conditions.
                  • You still need to serve your monthly home loan repayment on time as usual. The automatic set off mechanism does not apply here.
                  • Can make payment with cash (over the counter) and cheque only.
                  The redrawal terms and conditions for Capital Repayment is typically like this:
                  • Redrawing must be made at the OCBC branch.
                  • Need to submit the Redrawing Notice to OCBC 3 days before the redrawing occur.
                  • RM10 will be charged for each redraw.
                  • Only 1 redrawing per day.
                  • Redrawing must be in multiples of RM1000.
                  • Minimum redrawing amount is RM5000.

                  The mobile view of this blog

                  Google Analytics shows that about 15% of my visitors to this blog are actually reading with mobile device. Last month, 37.37% of the mobile visits are from iPhone, 29.43% from Android, 27.31% from iPad, 1.86% from Symbian, and the rest from others.

                  If you are accessing this blog (or any other blogs hosted in Google's Blogger a.k.a. Blogspot platform) with your mobile device, you will be able to browse its mobile view, which is a simpler, faster loading version. Here is how it looks like:


                  Scroll down to the bottom of the page, you can find the "View web version" option to switch to its web view.


                  Actually, web view is also pretty nice when browsed with my favourite mobile browser - Dolphin Browser.


                  It is even better if you rotate your phone to read in landscape mode.


                  Actually, there is a trick in the blog's URL to switch it to mobile view and vice versa.
                  If you are also blogging on Google's Blogger a.k.a. Blogspot, you can check how your blog looks like in its mobile view by accessing it with your mobile phone, or by accessing from any browser using the mobile view URL as above. There are several templates and settings which you can configure in the Settings > Email & Mobile tab.

                  The cost of selling a property in Malaysia

                  If you were to buy a property for investment, you should be well aware of the cost involved in buying the property, as well as the cost to sell it later.

                  The typical cost of selling the property consists of:
                  1. Advertisement fee to look for buyer (if any).

                  2. Agent fee (if you engage property agent to help you to sell your house): between 2%-2.75%. Officially, it is 2.75% if the selling price is below RM500k, and 2% if the selling price is above RM500k. There is a 6% government tax on this agent fee too.

                  3. Lawyer fee for Sales and Purchase Agreement (calculated based on the property's selling price, if you engage a lawyer on your behalf. You can save on this if you use the buyer's lawyer):

                  • First RM150k = 1% (or minimum RM300, whichever higher)
                  • Subsequent up to RM1 million = 0.7%
                  • Subsequent up to RM3 million = 0.6%
                  • Subsequent up to RM5 million = 0.5%
                  • Subsequent up to RM7.5 million = 0.4%
                  • Above RM7.5 million = negotiable
                  4. Deed of Receipt & Reassignment, Revocation of Power of Attorney, Letter of Undertaking, Statutory Declaration, etc. = a few hundreds                      

                  5. Miscellaneous legal fee = at least a few hundreds

                  6. 6% government tax on total lawyer fee

                  7. Submission of CKHT 1A form per seller = RM300 (RM600 if the house is jointly owned by 2 owners) 

                  8. Real Property Gain Tax = 5% of net profit if selling within 5 years of acquisition

                  9. Penalty payable for early mortgage settlement (if still within lock-in period) = depends on the loan agreement

                  Besides, you can get back some surrender value (partial refund on premium paid) from the following (if applicable):
                  • Mortgage Reducing Term Assurance (MRTA)
                  • Fire insurance

                    If you were to buy a property for own stay or for investment, you should be well prepared for the cost involved.

                    The typical cost consists of:

                    A. One time cost

                    1. The booking fee, down payment and subsequent unfinanced payment of the property (normally about 10%-20% of the property price)

                    2. Lawyer fee for Sales and Purchase Agreement (calculated based on the property price):

                    • First RM150k = 1% (or minimum RM300, whichever higher)
                    • Subsequent up to RM1 million = 0.7%
                    • Subsequent up to RM3 million = 0.6%
                    • Subsequent up to RM5 million = 0.5%
                    • Subsequent up to RM7.5 million = 0.4%
                    • Above RM7.5 million = negotiable
                    3. Miscellaneous fee for preparation of Sales and Purchase Agreement = at least a few hundreds

                    4. 6% government tax on total lawyer fee for Sales and Purchase Agreement

                    5. Stamp Duty of Sales and Purchase Agreement (calculated based on the property price):

                    12. Consent to Charge (for leasehold property) = at least a few hundreds + 6% government tax on legal fee

                    13. Mortgage Reducing Term Assurance (MRTA, optional) = a few thousands

                    14. Deposit for water and electricity = at least a few hundreds

                    Case-Mate Tough case for HTC Incredible S

                    Recently, I managed to get a Case-Mate Tough case for my HTC Incredible S Android smartphone at a bargain price (almost the same price with my Case-Mate Barely There case).

                    The Case-Mate Tough case is a 2-in-1 case that provides double-layer protection to the phone, and officially claimed to be able to withstand sudden drops and accidental falls.

                    The inner layer is a soft rubber-like feeling silicone skin, covering up the phone (including the buttons) to provide the impact protection, and the outer layer is a hard polycarbonate shell, which is the same material with Case-Mate Barely There case, providing additional protection, as well as gripping the inner layer firmly to the phone.

                    Pros:
                    • You can immediately feel that the protection to the phone is great.
                    • Access to the phone's power button is much better than Case-Mate Barely There case.
                    Cons:
                    • It makes your phone become bulky.
                    • It also makes your phone heavier.
                    • More troublesome to wear and remove, as it consists of 2 layers.
